EuroMarine is committed to supporting early career researchers and promote bottom-up science from the marine science community. Following a successful Young Scientist Working Group (YSWG), the first “Orienting Young Scientists of EuroMarine (OYSTER)” group was formed in early 2018 to engage with early career scientists (ECRs) and soon expanded to include a forum of 20 PhDs and post-docs from member institutions located throughout 13 countries. Funded under the EuroMarine 2019 Call, OYSTER II will continue to advance these goals, by engaging with and representing early career scientists within the EuroMarine network, contributing towards the cohesive outreach and capacity building of early career scientists across EuroMarine member organisations and developing initiatives to support and integrate early career researchers within the European marine landscape.

The pursuit of these aims will begin with a workshop to be held in Piran, Slovenia, ahead of the 2020 EuroMarine GA.

The workshops objectives include:

  • Empower ECRs by supporting their personal and professional development through skill-sharing sessions lead by experts from different sectors.

  • Build on the 2018 survey findings to stimulate discussion and identify concerns and topics of interest to ECRs.

  • Use the outcomes of their workshop to inform a redesigned and more effective 2020 survey.

  • Design an OYSTER platform (including a mentorship programme, output documents and exchange forum).

There is no registration fee, however interested participants are asked to register by 8 December 2019. To submit your application, send an e-mail to oysterateuromarinenetwork [dot] eu (copying Alina [dot] Maditaatgmail [dot] com and stefania [dot] piarulli2atunibo [dot] it) introducing yourself, your motivation to participate and whether you would like to be considered for the travel support fund.
