Mentorship

A key finding of the OYSTER 2018 pilot survey of Early Career Scientists (ECRs) needs and concerns was that ECRs often feel a lack of support, as frequent interactions with supervisors are difficult and as issues may arise that do not pertain to the usual range of interactions with their supervisors.

Taking advantage of the European dimension of EuroMarine, the OYSTER group therefore designed, and decided to develop over the summer of 2020, a mentorship platform to allow European marine-science ECRs to receive different perspectives from experienced EuroMarine researchers on professional and/or personal issues. Please refer to the attached presentation for details.

How to participate

Mentors: EuroMarine researchers willing to participate in the programme and occasionally mentor ECRs, please:

Mentees: Please explore the mentor list below and see whether you feel any of the volunteer mentors would be particularly well-suited to you. Once you have identified a suitable mentor, or if you are unsure and would like assistance in this regard, please contact the OYSTER mentorship management team at mentorshipateuromarinenetwork [dot] eu (subject: Request%20for%20mentor)  with "Request for mentor" in the subject line

Please note that mentors will only be assigned through an official request to the mentorship e-mail address. Mentors will not respond to direct e-mails unless they have first been contacted by the OYSTER mentorship management team.

Mentor List

The following EuroMarine members have volunteered to serve as mentors as part of the pilot OYSTER mentorship programme. Interested mentees are welcome to view their profiles by clicking on their names below, which include information on their specialty areas and external links for learning more about their published work (such as through research gate).

Future version

The OYSTER group is currently exploring the devleopment of a standalone platform capable of dynamically and directly matching mentees with an appropriate mentor.

Principles underlying the operation of the platform

The OYSTER mentorship platform uniquely provides for all students and researchers working on marine-related topics.

Mentors include not only professors and instructors, but also postdoctoral and PhD researchers for mentoring bachelor and master-level students.  Mentors are (at least initially) from EM institutions.

The platform is intended as a service open to the marine scientific community at large. Its use is therefore not restricted to EuroMarine members and mentees may be from non-EuroMarine institutions.
