The 4ICESM will advance discourse around four themes related to the World Climate Research Programme's Grand Science Challenges. Invited cross-cutting presentations on the history, philosophy and sociology of Earth system science and a conference keynote lecture will complement presentations and posters on each of the themes, as outlined below.
The keynote speaker for the event is Thomas Stocker from University of Bern, Switzerland.

The conference will revolve around 4 main themes;
i. Clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity (Bjorn Stevens and Sandrine Bony)
ii. Decadal prediction and attribution (Jochem Marotzke and Gabi Hegerl)
iii. Modelling past climate changes (Martin Claussen and Pascale Braconnot)
iv. Carbon feedbacks in the climate system (Tatiana Ilyina and Pierre Friedlingstein)
