As a Helmholtz centre for polar and marine research the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) works in the cold and temperate regions of the world. Together with national and international partners the AWI deciphers the complicated processes in the Earths system. At this time the planet is undergoing a radical change; including the polar areas and seas which hold vital roles in the global climate system. As an internationally respected centre of expertise on polar and marine research, the AWI coordinates German polar research efforts, while also conducting research in the North Sea and adjacent coastal regions. Combining innovative approaches, outstanding research infrastructure and years of expertise, the AWI explores many aspects of the Earths system from the atmosphere to the ocean floor.
