The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel is one of Europe's leading institutes in the field of marine sciences. GEOMARs mandate is the interdisciplinary investigation of relevant aspects of modern marine sciences, from sea floor geology to marine meteorology. Research is conducted worldwide. The foundation is funded by the federal and state government. The institute has four major research divisions: Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, Marine Biogeochemistry, Marine Ecology and Dynamics of the Ocean Floor. GEOMAR contributes to the “Future Ocean” Cluster of Excellence and collaborative research centres, actively participating in a number of national and international committees and strategic alliances.
