The Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) is a specialized technical agency of the Ministry of Production, aimed at the research and study of the Peruvian sea and its resources. IMARPE advises the State regarding the use of fishery resources and conservation. IMARPE has five Directorate Generals: Pelagic Resources, Groundfish Resources and Coastlines, Oceanographic Research and Climate Change, Aquaculture Research, and Hydro-acoustical, Remote Sensing and Fishing Gear. IMARPE research studies the physical, chemical and biological oceanographic processes with an ecosystem approach. Under this approach the relationship between fisheries resources, the environment and fishing activity is investigated, providing advice on the management of resources and the marine environment, respecting and promoting the concepts of sustainable development, conservation of marine biodiversity, environmental protection environment and responsible fishing.
