The Marine Institute of Ireland was set up in 1991 to undertake, coordinate, promote and assist in marine research and development and to provide services related to research and development that will promote economic development, create employment and protect the marine environment. It provides scientific and technical advice to help inform policy and to support the sustainable development of Ireland's marine resource. In order to achieve this vision, the MI has six service areas including Ocean Science and Information Services, Marine Environment & Food Safety Services, Fisheries Ecosystems Advisory Services, Irish Maritime Development Office, Corporate Services and Policy, Innovation and Research Support Services. The MI works across this range of areas to ensure the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resource, to improve understanding and to safeguard the resource for future generations.
