Oxford is a collegiate university, consisting of the central University and colleges. The University hosts an active group interested in the structure and evolution of the world's ocean basins and their margins, mapping deep-sea sediment processes, continental margins, lithospheric flexure and sedimentary basins. The ocean research and conservation group undertakes research in several areas including: the Antarctica and Southern ocean; Coral reefs, both tropical and deep reefs; Deep sea soft sediments, seamounts and hydrothermal vents; and Marine policy looking at new management strategies. The scientists have undertaken several international and global projects with several renowned organisations such as the UN Division of Oceans and Law of the Sea and the IUCN.
