The Zoological Museum and the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries science belong to the University of Hamburg. The IHF conducts interdisciplinary research in all fields of marine science to understand the functioning and sensitivity of marine ecosystems under different pressures. The institute hosts two core research groups, Biological Oceanography and Fisheries Science. Study sites are in the North and Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic, the Benguela Upwelling System and the Mediterranean Sea. Activities are conducted independently and in cooperation with national and international partner institutions. The University has a Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability. Ongoing interdisciplinary projects relate to climate impacts and marine feedback mechanisms. The Museum permanently exhibits various life forms and species, alongside temporary exhibitions and other events. It is used extensively for university teaching.
