The EuroMarine Working Group OYSTER (Orienting Young ScientisTs of EuromaRine), has opened a call for Early Career Scientists of EuroMarine to join their early career network.

OYSTER is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative young scientists that are willing to play an important role in advocating EuroMarine and promoting the role and relevance of marine science and the ocean in general. OYSTER in particular seeks individuals within the field of marine social science to join the working group.

Background

The OYSTER network was set up in early 2019 following the success of the 2018 Young Scientists Working Group (the outputs of that working group can be found here). The goal of OYSTER is to support a bottom-up approach and help understand and develop the marine landscape of early career researchers. The working group currently consists of 18 early career scientists from across EuroMarine member institutes. The specific goals of OYSTER are to:

  • Establish a permanent network designed and driven by young researchers themselves
  • Engage, empower and assist early career marine scientists by establishing a platform for networking and collaboration
  • Support EuroMarine bottom-up approach by communicating early career marine scientists’ matters of concern to develop ways the network can help to address these concerns

More information about OYSTER can be found here.

Application

The ideal candidate is a PhD student or post-doctoral researcher in their first position after their PhD and who is based at a EuroMarine Member Organisation or Invited Member Organisation. Individuals should have experience in marine-based research and be willing to use their creativity, imagination, communication and interpersonal skills to help promote marine science and EuroMarine activities. To enable a maximum representation of EuroMarine members, OYSTER would particularly like to invite applications from EuroMarine institutes which do not yet have an early career researcher in the OYSTER network (a list of those can be found below).

The position will commence in May 2019 and commitment for one-year is required*. This timeframe will allow members to follow projects from start to finish and attend relevant events.

Interested candidates should send a one-page motivation letter together with their CV to: alina [dot] wieczorekatnuigalway [dot] ie (alina [dot] wieczorekatnuigalway [dot] ie) AND stefania [dot] piarulli2atunibo [dot] it by the 12th of April 2019. New members will be selected in early May 2019.

Please share this information with any relevant candidate within the EuroMarine Member Organisations.

*If the candidate moves from a EuroMarine member institute to a non-EuroMarine member institute he/she is encouraged to promote EuroMarine within their new institute. If the new institute is not interested in becoming a EuroMarine member the candidate may finish their one-year term as an OYSTER member regardless.
